Benmore Peninsula and Deep Stream Sunday 14th June

Six people travelled from Timaru to the top of Benmore Dam to walk the Peninsula Track. On arrival at the carpark Justin and his three delightful children Jack, James and Emma were waiting to join us. This walk took us through a mixed forest on a loop track. We were rewarded with fantastic views of the islands including Junction Island and the mountains beyond with Mount Cook clearly in sight.

After a pleasant lunch break sitting in the sun at a Waitangi Camp Site on the Te Akatarawa Road we carried on to the Deep Stream Track. This is called a “flooded canyon” area which is on the northern side of Lake Aviemore. A very tranquil walk which even had some kowhai flowering (early or late??). Both walks and the roadsides still had spectacularly vivid autumn colours, especially the poplars and weeping willows. An awesome day.
