25th – 26th January Crooked Spur/Stone Hut Mesopotamia

Grade- Moderate

We will drive to Mesopotamia on Friday evening and camp.  From Bush stream car park it is approximately a 4 hour walk to Crooked Spur Hut, then 3 hours to Stone Hut. We will return the same way.

Trotters George is aprox. 3km south of Moeraki. Pleasant riverside track walking.

February Trips

6th – 9th February Waitangi Weekend   Unknown Hutt and Moa Streams Wilberforce Area

Grade -  Moderate  /  Hard

 It is intended that we leave Timaru early on the 6th February and drive to Glenthorn Station, park cars and load my truck for the journey to Fang Hill Hut or beyond if possible. We will leave the truck on the Glenthorn side and walk over the Wilberforce River and head for the Unknown Stream and Hut. We will spend two nights at the hut plus tents, Friday we explore up the Griffiths stream and perhaps also view the historic Urquhart’s hut which dates back to 1930 and is further up the Wilberforce.  Saturday we will climb 200 m from the Unknown stream to the Moa saddle via a poled route, then down the Moa basin to the Moa Stream Hut where we stay the night. Sundays walk will be down the Moa with a visit to the Algidus Station Moa hut then back to the vehicle and home.

Monday 10th February 2014   Claremont Bush.  

Evening walk at Claremont bush which is at the base of Mt Horrible.

We will meet at the car park at Sports Stadium, Morgans Road 6.00pm. This is in place of the club meeting at the hall in February.

Craigmore Station  Sunday 16th February

A short walk on Craigmore Station up to a bothy on the top of the hill. Extensive views and some interesting geological features of note

22nd – 23rd February Bivy Rock Canyon Creek  

Grade Moderate/Hard

The tramping track takes you over the spectacular canyon and through beech forest to the upper valley’s waterfalls and grassy flats. After a reasonable climb to the top of the hanging valley and continuing on to Bivy rock below Mt Bath where we will camp.

March Trips

Nelson Lakes                                        8th – 16th March  

An eight day circuit of the Nelson Lakes, heading up the Travers Valley, over Travers Saddle, into the Sabine, a side trip to Blue Lake,down to Lake Rotorua,up to Angelus and thence back to St Arnard. Good tracks and huts all the way. A possibility of putting in a food drop part the way round.

Mueller Hut.                                29th – 30th March

Grade Medium plus

We will now depart from Timaru early on Saturday morning.

Sat, take track up to and beyond Sealy Tarns to Mueller Hut, staying the night, Mueller Hut route is about 5.2

km long, which includes a steep 1000 m climb. It usually

takes 3–4 hours one way depending on fitness, weather

and conditions        

5-6 hours walk. Mueller Hut fee is $36.00.

Mt Barossa - S Ashburton Gorge           2nd March 

Grade easy to moderate

Day trip to Mt Barossa which is situated in the south Ashburton Gorge.

Views overlooking South Ashburton Gorge to Lake Heron and Woolshed creek and Mt Sommers.

April Trips

Fox Peak                                     5-6 April 2014

We have been invited to join the Methven Tramping Club for their trip to Fox Peak. We will climb Fox Peak on Sat,Moderate to Hard. Then stay in the Fox Peak Lodge on Sat night. On Sunday will be an easy day out to the North Opuha, visiting the Spurs Hut.

Woolshed Creek                         13th April 2014

Day trip to Woolshed creek then return by the bus stop route. A great day walk with lots of interesting features along the way, and of course the Woolshed Creek Hut

18th – 21st April  (Easter)

We will travel on Thursday evening and camp close for the night. We will walk up on to Lewis tops and tramp to Lake Christabel then exit out via Rough Creek. If time permits we will walk into Lake Daniels.
