May Trips

Pudding Hill Range                                         Sunday 28th May  

Grade: Easy/moderate

This will be a reasonable day’s adventure.

Camp Koromiko to point 1751m 3-4 hours returning via ridge 2-3 hours. Starting at Pudding Hill Stream.

Great views over the plains in in the other direction the Taylor Range.

Erewhon Station                                              14th-16th July

Grade: Moderate

We have the homestead booked at Erewhon Station, which is very warm. As winter tramping we have several choices up there. All will depend on the weather and Clyde River.  $20 a night per person. We will pot luck the Saturday night meal. No cell ph coverage.

Squires Bridge                                               Sunday 14th May   

Grade: Easy

Squires Bridge is on the Back Line Road near Otaio Gorge Station. We will walk up the farm track that follows the stream. This will be an easy day walk.

June Trips

Akaroa  Walks                              3-5 June (Queens Birthday)  

Grade: Easy

We will stay at a backpackers in Akaroa and do day walks from here. There are plenty to fill our days.

August Trips

Kayaking Lyttleton                                     14th -15th October

Trip departing early Saturday morning, staying Saturday night in tent or camper van if you have one in Orton Bradley Park possibly using outdoor centre which has showers, toilet, kitchen, BBQ. Kayak on Lyttleton harbour & visit Quail Island which has a 2.5hr walking track & much history. If people don't wish to kayak there is the option of walking on the port hills as we are at the base of Mt Bradley & Herbert. Orton Bradley has thru its plantings of Rhododendrons. No Kayaking Experience needed. We can supply 8 kayaks @ $20 per day if numbers exceed this we can look at other options but require numbers ASAP.

Baychops  Hill                                                   18th June      

Grade: Easy

Baychops hill is in the MacKenzie Pass.

Mt Alford                                                 Saturday 16th September

Grade: Easy – Moderate                                           

Located in Alford Scenic Reserve. The track takes you to the summit of Mt Alford. Great views across Canterbury Plains and inland mountains.  Approximately 5-6 hours return.

Rangitata Gorge Bike Ride                      Sunday 1st October

Grade: Experience required.

A bike trip from Raules Gully to Mesopotamia. This is a there and back trip of 70km total distance up the Rangitata Gorge road. Experience of cycling on shingle essential.

Benmore Dam Walking Track & Kurow Hill  

                                                                   Sunday 3rd September

Grade: Easy

This will be an easy day. The Lake Benmore walking track starts at the top of Benmore Dam and is an interesting and varied walk taking in great views including Mt Cook. On the return we will stop off at Kurow and walk the Kurow Hill track which is a short walk.

Lake Emma and Lake Roundabout               Saturday 20 May 

Grade easy
These two lakes are in the Hakatere conservation park. I envisage we should be able to walk around both as Lake Emma the bigger one will only take about 2 and half hours. We will pass the small historic Emma hut on the lake edge.
After this we will drive five minutes more and walk around the small Lake Roundabout.
Both these lakes are very picturesque and have lovely reflections so bring your camera.

September Trips

Mt Fyfe and Kaikoura                              21st – 23rd October

Depart Timaru early on Saturday and spend Saturday night at Mt Fyffe. It is about 3 hours to the hut where there are stunning views of the Kaikoura coast. 

Sunday return to Kaikoura where we will camp or backpack. On Sunday afternoon there will be a new coastline to explore and on Monday we will do the Peninsula walk and some exploring on the trip South.

Lake Christabel Circuit Track               23 – 25 September

Grade: Fit

We will drive on Friday after work to Marble Hill and camp for the night. It will be an early start on Saturday morning with drive to Palmer Road at the Blue Grey River Bridge start of track. On Saturday we will walk in to Christabel Hut (aprox 7 hours).  Sunday continuing on the Robinson river and Saddle Track to the Top Robinson Hut aprox 3 ½ hours then another 3 hours to the Mid Robinson Hut for the night (aprox. 6 ½ hours) Monday will be a 3 ½ hour walk out to the end of Palmer Road. We will then drive home. These are reasonably big days so good fitness required.

October Trips

Big Easy Track Waimate                   Sunday 29th October

Grade: Easy

This is also known as the White horse trail. This track has recently been upgraded and now open to the public.  The track takes us up to the White horse. From here great views out to the east. Extensions to this walk are possible.

November Trips

Cass Lagoon                                  11th – 12th November

Grade: Moderate

We will start from the Cass Saddle car park and walk in to Hamilton Hut (approximately 6 ½ hours). The track follows the Cass river and will involve crossing the river a few times. It is 4 hours to the Cass Saddle Hut then the track climbs gradually to the saddle then drops down to the Hamilton Creek and from there only15minutes to the Hamilton Hut. Return passes West Harper Hut (2 ½ hours then another 2 ½ hours to Bealy Hut which is close to the car park at Cora Lynn  Station.

Mt Oxford                                Saturday 18th November

Grade: Moderate

Mt Oxford track takes you from Coopers Creek car park to the summit of Mt Oxford. Time is approximately 4 hours one way so will require an early start. Mt Oxford is 1364m and there are good views over the Canterbury Plains and into the Lees Valley. There is an alternate descent return to the car park at View Hill, or you can loop back to Coopers Creek car Park via Ryde Falls Track. (7-8 hours round trip)

December Trips

Snowy Gorge & Hideaway Biv           2nd – 3rd December

Grade: Moderate

We have to cross the Ahuriri River at a suitable point. Snowy Gorge creek flows through an open tussock clad valley. Distance approximately 11km and 5 hours. On return we will take a detour into Hideaway Biv. Snowy Gorge Hut is 5 bunk so it is likely we will carry tents.

Arthurs Pass Weekend                     5th & 6th August 2017

Grade: Easy

Staying at CTC Batch at Arthurs Pass Friday & Saturday nights.

Saturday Bealey Spur Track and Sunday subject to weather options are open.

Elco - Hopkins                                                 15th-16th July      

Grade: Moderate

A 4WD trip up the Hopkins Valley past Monument Hut then over to the true right for a climb up to Dazler Biv for starters then a drive/walk up to Elco Hut for the night and an explore of the lower Elco Stream the next morning before heading home.  Because the trip requires a 4WD vehicle the number is limited to 5 people.
