Red Hill                                                                                                                                                                            24th January

The weather forecast was for strong winds, but down on the Plains there was only a light breeze. At the Rakaia Gorge it still wasn’t too bad, and even along the Lake Lyndon road where we started tramping, conditions were reasonable. Up the valley floor, then a steep climb onto a ridge. It was starting to get windy here, and as we ascended it became quite vicious. A quick lunch was had in the lea of some rocks, then a speedy descent down a nice scree to the valley floor. Here conditions were very pleasant, just a light wind. Lots of other people in the area this day, a party of botanists were busy studying things at their feet, and another party of trampers intent on the summit had equally been thwarted by the wind. not a bad day out, despite not making our objective.

Those present; Catherine,Barry, Ross, Peter, Ken (from the Temuka club) and Robert (Scribe).
